Muscat to Nizwa Day Trip — Private Car from OMR 55
Kat arrived in Muscat from Thailand with a plan. She wanted to see Nizwa — the fort, the souq, the mountains beyond the city.
What she did not plan for was the weather changing overnight.
Her driver Nasser adapted the itinerary on the spot, took her by 4WD into the Hajar Mountains instead, and showed her villages most visitors never reach. “The scenery was beautiful,” she wrote afterward. “He was flexible in changing the plan last minute.”
That flexibility is not something you get on a group tour with a fixed schedule and twenty other passengers.
Why Nizwa Deserves a Full Day
Nizwa is 165 kilometres from Muscat — a 90-minute drive southwest on Highway 15 through the Hajar Mountains. It is Oman’s historical heartland, the seat of the Imamate, and the city that shaped much of what makes Omani culture distinct.
Most visitors give it three hours and leave feeling they have seen it. A full day — 8 hours — gives you time to understand it.
The fort takes 90 minutes to do properly. The souq has a rhythm that rewards patience. The date palm gardens at Birkat Al Mouz, 10 kilometres before Nizwa, are worth stopping for on the way back. And if weather and time allow, the mountain villages above Nizwa reveal a way of life that has changed very little in several hundred years.

The Itinerary
Departure from Muscat — 8:00 AM
Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Muscat. The drive to Nizwa takes approximately 90 minutes on a clear highway with good road conditions throughout.
Birkat Al Mouz — en route stop
Ten kilometres before Nizwa, the old village of Birkat Al Mouz sits at the base of the mountains beside one of the largest date palm oases in Oman. The abandoned adobe village above the oasis is accessible on foot and provides a striking view down across the palm gardens and the wadi below.
Most visitors driving to Nizwa pass this without stopping. It takes 30 minutes and adds genuine context to the journey.
Nizwa Fort — 10:00 AM
The fort opens at 9 AM and is best visited before midday, when the interior becomes hot and tour groups begin arriving from Muscat.
The circular tower — built in the 17th century under Imam Sultan bin Saif — is the largest in Oman. The base diameter is approximately 40 metres. Inside: cannons, weaponry, a functioning water trap system designed to flood the lower levels during invasion, and exhibits documenting Omani military history and traditional crafts across multiple floors.
Climb to the roof. The view over Nizwa’s palm gardens, the surrounding mountains, and the minaret of the Great Mosque below explains why this position was chosen.

Nizwa Souq — 11:30 AM
The souq sits immediately beside the fort and is one of the few traditional markets in Oman that functions as a genuine commercial space rather than a curated tourist experience.
Silver jewellery, khanjar daggers, Omani coffee and cardamom, frankincense and oud resins, pottery, and dates fill the covered stalls. Prices are negotiable. Quality varies. Your guide knows which vendors are reliable.
The Friday livestock market — if your visit falls on a Friday morning, the animal souq runs from approximately 7 AM to 11 AM. Goats, cattle, and camels change hands in a market that has operated in this form for centuries. Arriving in Nizwa by 8 AM is required to see it properly. We can adjust the departure time from Muscat accordingly.
Lunch — 1:00 PM
Your guide will recommend a local restaurant in Nizwa — not the tourist-facing places near the fort, but the ones where Omanis eat. Omani shuwa (slow-cooked spiced meat), harees, and fresh bread. Affordable and worth it.
Return to Muscat — 2:30 PM
Departure from Nizwa at approximately 2:30 PM, arriving back in Muscat by 4:00 to 4:30 PM.
Total: 8 hours from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off.
Optional Additions
Bahla Fort — 45 minutes west of Nizwa, Bahla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest forts in Oman. The mud-brick construction is unlike the stone forts elsewhere in the country. Addition: OMR 10–15 on the base price.
Jabreen Castle — 10 minutes from Bahla, Jabreen Castle dates from the 17th century and is the most ornate historical building in the Omani interior, with painted ceilings, carved wooden doors, and a rooftop falconry room. Addition: included with Bahla if combined.
Mountain villages above Nizwa — by 4WD, the road into the Hajar Mountains above Nizwa leads to villages at altitude with views across the interior that most tourists never reach. This is what Nasser showed Kat when the weather changed her plans. Addition: OMR 15–20 on the base price, 4WD required.

Friday Visits — Important Timing Note
Nizwa Fort is open on Fridays. The livestock market runs on Friday mornings only.
If you want to see the goat market, your departure from Muscat needs to be no later than 6:30 AM. We can arrange this — it requires an early start but the market is one of the most authentic experiences available in Oman and worth the early alarm.
If Friday is your only available day and the early departure is not possible, the fort and souq remain worth visiting from a standard 8:00 AM departure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the drive from Muscat to Nizwa? Approximately 90 minutes each way on Highway 15. The road is well-maintained and clearly signed throughout.
Is Nizwa suitable for children? Yes. The fort has a lot to explore and children respond well to the scale of the tower. The souq is manageable with young children. The mountain village option on rough roads is better suited to older children and adults.
Do I need a 4WD for the standard Nizwa trip? No. Nizwa and the fort are fully accessible by standard car. A 4WD is only required if you want to add the mountain village extension.
Can I visit Nizwa as a half-day trip? Technically yes, but you would need to choose between the fort and the souq — not both. A full day allows you to do both properly and include Birkat Al Mouz on the return.
What if I want to add Jebel Akhdar to the Nizwa day? Jebel Akhdar is 45 minutes from Nizwa and requires a 4WD. Combining Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar in one day is possible but makes for a long day. We recommend either dedicating a separate day to Jebel Akhdar or choosing between the two. Contact us to discuss which suits your schedule.
